POEMS FOR THE WEEK

In the Mountains on a Summer Day

Li Po - 700-761

Gently I stir a white feather fan,

With open shirt sitting in a green wood.

I take off my cap and hang it on a jutting stone;

A wind from the pine-trees trickles on my bare head.

Shadows

by Langston Hughes

We run,
We run,
We cannot stand these shadows!
Give us the sun.

We were not made
For shade,
For heavy shade,
And narrow space of stifling air
That these white things have made.
We run,
Oh, God,
We run!
We must break through these shadows,
We must find the sun.

PLUS A SELECTION from SPLIT ROCK BOOKS

For Outside IN, we are reading Wildwood, Pablo & Birdy, Zoe in Wonderland and Pilu of the Woods.  Readers are invited to read at their own pace

WEEK ONE  - ACTIVITY 2

LOOK UP /  LOOK DOWN

Sky 1.jpeg

LOOK

Look up, look down,

wherever you are.   Do you see the sky?  Do see trees?  Do you see cracks in the sidewalk or street?

Cloud Sketch.JPG

SKETCH

Make a sketch of what you see.

Looking_Up.jpg

IMAGINE

What characters do you see?  What stories do they have to tell?  Draw or write about them.

WEEK ONE  - ACTIVITY 3

ShaDOW MAPPING

Shadow Mapping
Tracing Shadows

LOOK

Place your sketchbook under some interesting shadows.  This can be anywhere inside or outside.  Lightly trace the shadows as you see them.

Fill In

TRACE

When you have time, you can go back over the lines that you drew.  Which ones do you want to make darker, which ones can stay lighter?  What shapes do you see?

Color or Paint

DRAW

You can decide to take the shapes that you drew and fill them in.   We used a pencil to shade in the shapes, but you can also use your paints or colored pencils if you'd like!
