Truth time.

The Amazon truck visits me too.  (We'll come back to art in a little bit, don't worry.)  It brings replacement parts of something that no one else will sell me (deep dive in the 2025 order history - ear cushions for my favorite headphones, replacement batteries for the vacuum, older model sneakers from a brand I wanted to try at a very steep discount, lamp wire in a very specific color and length, the special(?) velcro that keeps your EZ Pass from falling on your dashboard) and of course, my beloved Kindle to read e-books from the library on.

Nothing is all good, nothing is all bad - most of the time, it's a thrill to live in the modern world where things can zip to you in a blink of an eye, where you can search for a needle in the haystack from the comfort of your home.  But as we all know, the world is off kilter in all the ways and it's hard in the current climate to feel like anything you do as a singular human being can impact the overwhelming shitshow.

Here's where art comes in.  There's nothing like the practice of learning to make something from nothing that helps bolster the inner belief that the world is actually completely malleable from top to bottom. The ability to look at something in the world and know without a doubt that you can find a creative solution that feels in integrity with the kind of human you want to be is the everyday artist's secret pass to life. If you say you support small business / women / diversity / the environment, you need to also live your life like you do.

I get a special flavor of joy when I use credit cards points to pay Mr Bezos, trading imaginary money for real things that make my life better. In the words of Ram Dass, "you can do it like it's a great weight on you, or you can do it like a dance." We're here anyway, shitshow and all. Let's dance and learn to play with the world and the parts that it presents to us.  Make your life art, messy imperfections required.
